Throughout the history of the automobile, one brand amongst all others has served the heart and soul of car enthusiasts worldwide; It is Alfa Romeo. Beginning in 1910, Alfa Romeo has delivered breathtaking vehicles that won on the road and the track. No matter the era, Alfa Romeo has stood as a brand that ignites your passion and love of automobiles.

We at Ken Ganley Alfa Romeo Bedford want to share the history of this renowned brand, from its humble beginnings to the modern era.

The Beginning

In 1910, Italian aristocrat Ugo Stell purchased the remaining shares of the struggling Società Italiana Automobili Darracq and renamed it Alfa, or Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili. The first Alfa car produced over this time was the Alfa 24HP, featuring a 4.1-liter engine and single drive shaft.

Five years later, during the first World War, Stell wanted the Alfa company to have a successful electrical engineer, Nicola Romeo. From 1918 onwards, the company would go public and be known as Alfa-Romeo.

Success on the Track

With Alfa Romeo, the success you see on the roads near Bedford, OH, can be traced back to success on the track. In 1923, Alfa Romeo racing cars would conquer the greatest races by winning the legendary Targa Florio with the Alfa Romeo RL, driven by Ugo Sivocci. A year later, Alfa Romeo would launch one of the greatest grand Prix cars of the decade, the Alfa Romeo P2.

Over the next few decades, Alfa Romeo would continue its long success on the track. In 1950, they would win the first ever Formula One World Championship with the Alfa Romeo 159, driven by the great Nino Farina. They would repeat the mark the next year with Juan Manuel Fangio driving.

In the 1970s, Alfa Romeo would conquer more motorsports championships by winning the European Touring Car Championship with the Alfa Romeo GTA Junior. Further, the Alfa Romeo 33 TT 12 would dominate the World Sports Car Championship in 1974, 1975, and 1977. In the 1990s and early 2000's Alfa Romeo would continue to dominate the world of touring car racing with the Alfa Romeo 155 and Alfa Romeo 156 GTA.

The Years of Flow

During the 1930s, Alfa Romeo would launch one of the decade's icons, the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900. Bedford, OH drivers could experience the majesty of the aerodynamic design in two variants; the short Spider Corsa and long wheelbase Coupe Touring.

After World War II, Alfa Romeo would launch two new automobiles of stunning design; the 1947 Alfa Romeo Freccia d'Oro and 1949 Villa D'Este. Both cars showcased the classic flowing lines of the brand. In 2950, Alfa Romeo would launch the practical and family-oriented 1900. Powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, 1900 was good for 115 horsepower and over 110 miles per hour.

The Heart in Design

During the 1960s and '70s, Alfa Romeo would thrill the world with several iconic cars, including the Alfa Romeo Giulia, GTA, and celebrated Alfa Romeo Spider. The Spider would become a pop-culture icon with an appearance in the 1967 film "The Graduate."

In 1970, the Bertone-designed Alfa Romeo Montreal would debut. The Montreal was powered by a 2.6-liter engine that delivered 200 horsepower and was good for 140 miles per hour.
